(500) Days of Summer - A Refreshing Look on Love

"This is not a love story, this is a story about love"
I think I liked this movie the moment I read that on the poster. I am not a fan of romantic comedies because of my own personal feelings towards the inaccuracy of such films (they turn my stomach). So I was looking forward to this film.
From the bold narrator to the surreal scenes going through Tom Hansen's (played by Joseph Gordon-Levitt) head, this really was a breath of fresh air.
The story follows, although not linearly, the 500 days that Summer Finn (played by Zooey Deschanel) is in Tom's life. There is a beautiful romance that has the viewer wishing it will work out. Unfortunately, we already know it won't thanks to an earlier warning from the ever helpful narrator. The breakup is painful and the viewer feels it along with Tom.
The part that stuck out the most to me occurred after the break up. Tom makes a small speech about the false picture of love that the media feeds the public. Although he is obviously talking out of bitterness I couldn't help but agree with him.
The soundtrack was fantastic. It had me getting on itunes right away to add a few new tracks to my 2010 playlist.
The weak points of this film are in the supporting characters, particularly his impossibly mature sister - who, at first, was charming but quickly became unbelievable.
I'm also torn on the last few minutes of the film. For arts sake, I wanted it to end with him continuing to pursue his dreams without the need for love. But the small romantic part of myself wanted it to end with a little hope for love. The film ended somewhere in between these two alternatives- which made for a satisfactory ending.
