Sometimes I forget that Natalie Portman is a brilliant actress. The first few thoughts that come to mind when I hear her name is usually associated with Star Wars. I believe Black Swan may change that forever.
Darren Aronofsky and Portman give the audience one hell of a dramatic thriller.
Black Swan tells the story of Nina Sayers as she prepares for the role of a lifetime: The Swan Queen. As a woman, I quickly connected with Nina as the vulnerable almost innocent female striving for perfection. She's obsessed with it. And in her current role perfection means embracing her darker side.
There are so many themes in this movie, its hard for me to just focus on one. There's loss of innocence, seduction, paranoia, pressure to be perfect, etc.
The sexual content in the film surprised me. I knew about a few of the scenes, I just didn't realize how long they lingered. I watched this with my mom (word of advice- don't do this) so that made those scene a little awkward to watch. The sexuality and slight violence was necessary to the atmosphere of this film. Almost like it was building up to that moment when Nina finally becomes the Black Swan.
Just as a side note though, if a lot of sexuality bother you, I'd skip this film.
I know a movie is great and complete when I just feel satisfied at the end. I felt satisfied at the end of Slumdog Millionaire, District 9, Inglourious Basterds and The Hurt Locker. When the credits rolled for Black Swan I felt full. I had a plenty of plot, characters and imagery to digest for a couple of days.
