Captain America: The Film I've Been Waiting For

September 13th 2011 05:43
I’m sure everyone is tired of all the superhero movies we’ve had over the past decade but this is the one I’ve been waiting for. Steve Rogers (AKA Capt. America) is my favorite character out of the Marvel universe!

The movie tells his origin story during World War 2. Steve Rogers (Chris Evans) is a 90 pound weakling with a deep desire to serve his country. He tries repeatedly to enlist but gets rejected for his numerous health problems. After being chosen by Dr. Erskine (Stanley Tucci) to participate in an experimental program he transforms into a super soldier.

look at that jawline...
Oh Captain, my Captain

After proving himself a second time he becomes the leader of a team with the mission to take down the Nazi science division known as HYDRA.

The first thing that stood out to me was Chris Evan’s performance as Steve Rogers. He was both admirable and lovable. Dr. Erskine called him “a good man.” He’s an old-fashioned hero in its truest form. Evan’s portrayed him without making him unrealistic and boring. The quote from the film that resonated with me came from Rogers when asked if he just wanted to kill Nazi’s. He replied, “I don’t want to kill anyone. I don’t like bullies. I don’t care where they’re from.” I think that alone outlines who Steve Rogers is.

Really, the characters make this movie. Hayley Atwell played the ‘female-in-a-man-world’ without the clichés, and Tommy Lee Jones added just the right amount of humor. Even though we didn’t get a whole lot of Howard Stark (Dominic Cooper) it was hard to resist his Stark charm (probably a family trait).

What makes Captain America unique in the comic book genre is the time and setting. I’m a sucker for films set during World War 2: The people, the style, the heroism. The First Avenger had all of these. The movie had this rich 1940s feeling to it. And the adventure aspect had me recalling Spielberg’s Indiana Jones.

The people, setting and scenery were splendid but I felt that the pacing of the film was a little choppy. A scene would change and I would wonder how we got there. The filmmakers had a lot of story to tell so I assume that was the reason for all the skipping around.

I also found Hugo Weaving’s big baddie Red Skull a little one-dimensional especially when you compare him to the multi-dimensional villain Loki from Thor. He looked great but I feel like he was missing motive or passion.

Though not as strong as the first Iron Man, I’m happy to report that Captain America stands up with the other Marvel movies over the past few years. And I can’t wait for The Avengers coming out next summer!

PS – Stay after the credits. You won’t regret it!
