Depp-a-Thon Volume 2: Don Juan Demarco. Gilbert Grape, Ed Wood

April 14th 2010 04:36
The next set of Johnny Depp films are ones that I’ve been meaning to watch for a long time. I’d heard so much about Gilbert Grape and Ed Wood but I never got around to actually getting my hands on them.

Don Juan Demarco

I actually watched snatches of this movie years ago when it was first out. I would’ve been around 9 or 10..and boy did it go over my head! This movie is littered with sexual humor and whimsical (almost tongue-in-cheek) romance. It’s funny but awkward at times.

I believe Marlon Brando really steals the show. I loved Johnny in this one, but it’s Marlon’s character that the audience relates to and it’s his character that ultimately changes and finds a ‘new life’.

This movie was fun, but I probably won’t watch it again.

What’s Eating Gilbert Grape

Was painfully realistic in its portrayal of everyday life. I found that I would feel awkward and uncomfortable during scenes. At first I thought this was annoying until the end of the movie. Sometimes I need the ending to tie a film together. Those feelings were brought on because the director and actors were flawless at presenting real life in a movie format. Ultimately, this movie is about those unsung heroes in real life.

We see such a hero in Gilbert Grape- a boy in a small town who looks after his mentally handicapped brother. It’s clear that his life isn’t really going too far.

Depp was amazing at presenting this repressed character. Gilbert remains passive during most of the events in his life- almost as if there is a tension building beneath the surface. He knows he must endure so he does without complaint. This all blows up at one pinnacle point in the film.

So, good film. Great direction, acting (wow, Leonardo) and script.

Ed Wood

I was both looking forward to this movie as well as dreading it. I had heard about the eccentric Edward D. Wood Jr. and to be honest- I didn’t want to see Johnny Depp crossdress.

But this has got to be one of my favorite movies so far! It was so funny and ironic.

Johnny Depp was amazing as the eternally optimistic Ed Wood. This aspect- his optimism – is what made this movie for me. All this crap keeps happening to him but he just smiles strangely and goes quickly to his next project. While I thought the scenes of Depp in a skirt would be odd- it was actually quite funny!

There were so many directorial characteristics in this film that made it perfect. The black and white, the way the movie played out like an Ed Wood film, the actors and the humor. I thoroughly enjoyed this movie. I’d watch it again!

I haven't seen Don Juan DeMarco but I adored Gilbert Grape and Ed Wood! Johnny Depp is seriously one of the most talented actors in Hollywood. But yes, Leo gave him a run for his money in Gilbert Grape.

Haven't done a movie marathon in ages........ might have to get onto that. Good post

Thanks! I love movie marathons. I usually do small one quite often. This is the first one I've done with others though. It's been a lot of fun!
