Don’t Judge a Movie by its Trailer (Part One)
August 16th 2009 06:14
I feel completely behind the times. I have yet to get my lazy self over to my theatre to watch G. I. Joe. This is probably the last big blockbuster of the summer and I have yet to view it.
I will try to make it over there tomorrow or Monday.
But before actually seeing the movie, I want to write a review of the trailer. The trailer to this film has haunted me all summer. Because we had an overabundance of this preview, I put it on the front of Star Trek, Transformers 2, Up, and even Harry Potter.
So I saw it a few times. And if I had to guess the quality of the movie judging by the feel of the trailer – I’d have to say that the movie is going to be rather awful.
The editor of the trailer seemed to be trying too hard. The trailer was overloaded with trite action phrase such as, “I want in,” or “We’re running out of time”. I was amazed by how many quick fades of vague CGI and hot girls in leather (sporting very large guns) were jammed into the 2 minutes and 30 seconds of film. Christopher Eccleston (why, doctor, why?) threatens the world and a team of tough guys who “never fail” are out to stop them. The movie could have been called Action Movie: The Rise of the CGI.
With that said – I have been wrong before when it comes to judging a movie by its trailer. At the first of this summer my absolute favorite trailers were Star Trek, which happened to outshine even the brilliance that was its trailer, and Terminator Salvation.
Terminator Salvation did not live up to its trailer. While the preview made the movie seem dark and gritty with strong characterizations and storyline - the actual movie was bland with one semi-impressive action sequence after another.
Last summer I loathed the trailer to Iron Man. It looked like a salute to testosterone. It had its own trite phrases and quick blinking scenes, but I was wrong there too. Iron Man turned out to be one of the best movies of 2008.
Will G. I. Joe follow in the footsteps of Iron Man? I believe it is unlikely (word of mouth and a quick glance at rottentomatoes.com seem to confirm my suspicions.) but I’ve always had an open mind. I will get back to you on the subject tomorrow or Monday.
