Into 'The Green Zone

The Green Zone
I went into this film fully expecting a subtle return of Jason Bourne, but I couldn’t have been more wrong. Sure it’s Matt Damon and sure the directorial style of Paul Greengrass is a perfect parallel of the Bourne movies but the story was completely different.
I thought I’d be watching a typical, but entertaining action flick. - not an Iraqi war movie with something to say. That isn’t to say this movie is just one big political statement. Rather it’s subtle in the ‘message’ that it sends out. Actually, I feel the point of the movie was summed up in one of the final lines delivered by an Iraqi local who decided to help Matt Damon’s character. He says, “It is not for you to decide what happens to my country”. Such powerful lines!
Two reasons to see Green Zone – One to skip:
1.) Message. As I mentioned before the subtle political statement is brilliantly interwoven in the plot. Honesty it doesn’t really matter what you thought about the war, this movie will say something to you. At the very least it will take you back to 2003 and remind you of all the news reports and rumors about WMDs and so on.
2.) Great Action. Matt Damon always delivers when it comes to entertaining action.
3.) BUT there was something slowing it down. I feel like the main plot of the story gets lost here and there leaving the audience scratching their heads and wondering why Matt Damon is so worked up. I was able to piece together what was going on by the end of the movie, but these periods when I didn’t know what was going on just encouraged me to nap in the middle of it. Fortunately there was enough action to keep my eyes open- if not my brain on the right track.
