Inception-Inspired-Indie film fest

August 24th 2010 05:13
Well, more like, “hey I came down with a mini-flu bug thing and I have this backlog of downloaded indie films I need to watch.” Inception reminded me how much I love Cillian Murphy and how I never did get around to watching Breakfast on Pluto even though I read the book in anticipation of the film.

Mr. Murphy- how are you doin'?

Inception has also introduced me to my newest actor obsession: Joseph Gordon-Levitt. An actor who I now twitter-stalk and purchase random magazines he graces the cover of. Yup, it’s that serious.
I'll take a cup of Joe...ok..ok bad joke.

I’d already seen and worshipped the masterpiece that is (500) Days of Summer so I chose a random, critically acclaimed independent movie of his called Mysterious Skin.

Whoa. That movie. Just Whoa. First of all I didn’t realize it was rated NC-17 till I had already watched it. I think the seedy subject material should’ve given it away. Regardless, this movie is simultaneously very good and very difficult to watch. It epitomizes the word ‘bittersweet’.

First off, I want to make it clear that the central subject matter of this movie is child molestation. It’s a very sad film to watch- mainly because of the reality of it.

The movie follows the struggles of two teenagers who were molested by their baseball coach as children. This film is brilliant because it shows the different ways an individual can cope with such an awful thing happening to them. One boy continues to make excuses for the coach while the other boy has completely erased the incident from his mind. They are like two sides to one coin.

About 15 minutes from the end of the movie I said, “This better have a good ending.” Honestly, I didn’t know how it could end well. But miraculously the director ended it in a satisfactory manner. I wouldn’t call it a happy ending, but it was the only way the movie could have ended.

I cannot praise Joseph Gordon-Levitt enough! He was perfection in this movie. His performance as the self-assured but inwardly struggling gay hustler completely broke my heart. Especially in the ending scenes when he finally realized what he had become and that what that man did to him was wrong.

So, brilliantly directed and acted but NOT FOR EVERYONE.

Moving on to Breakfast on Pluto. Apparently if a favorite actor of mine plays some kind of homosexual role…I only love him more!

Cillian Murphy plays Patrick ‘Kitten’ Braden who’s a refreshingly optimistic transvestite trying to find his mother. The political instability in Ireland and England during the 1970s serves as the perfect backdrop for his life story.

I adored Cillian and Kitten in this movie. After watching Mysterious Skin this was a nice change. I LOLed multiple times! Kitten is so sure of himself (herself?) that he says and does what he wants.

In a word: Refreshing. Well, the characters were refreshing.

I felt that the direction of this film was a little off. I guess I just didn’t know where it was all going. When it ended I just didn’t know the point of it. I enjoyed the time I spent with Kitten but I didn’t know why I spent it with him/her.

So both movies only helped my love for Cillian and Joe. More Cillian and Joe movies please! Any recommendations?
