King Corn

Continuing on my health food kick- I started watching an overabundance of health related documentaries.
A couple of weeks ago I watched this one: King Corn. King Corn follows two college friends as they relocate to Iowa to grow their own acre of corn and follow it to the american dinner table.
I appreciated this documentary because it focused on one specific food group- corn. In an earlier film I watched, Food, Inc. I was surprised to find out the diversity of products that contain corn. The guys from King Corn made similar discoveries.
They explored the use of corn in the meat industry and the 'sweets' industry.
Corn is used to fatten up most of the meat that is purchased at your local grocery store. So when you're eating that steak- you're also eating a lot of corn.
And then there's high fructose corn syrup. Something that I've started to avoid. High fructose corn syrup is a cheap sweetener that is found in many, many items.
The thing I liked most about this documentary is that it simply invites you to come along with the guys on their journey. The guys don't make any grand statements other then a few off hand remarks about recent statistics on lifespan. They present a few facts and have a few interviews and leave the viewer take that and do what they will with it.
The flow of the film was a little slow, but I was interested enough in the content that I didn't mind.
King Corn is available on instant play on Netflix. Here's a little something more on King Corn.
