The Last Song - Sparks Strikes Again!

We have a small theater so we just got this movie. It's not the type of movie I would go rushing to see either. Regardless, I watched it once it got to our screens.
Rottentomatoes.com calls this jewel "shamelessly manipulative". I can see why. I am not a fan of Nicholas Sparks. It just seems that he purposely manipulates the fantasies and feelings of women. He tries to put realism into this novels/movies with tragedy but that just makes the whole schmaltzy romances worse.
Sparks' films always leave me frustrated with romance. His films make me want to give up on the genre. I'm sure if you're a beautiful and angsty teen you'll find love in a super hunky, brilliantly smiled, insanely rich, volunteering, hard-working, local beach prince. Yea..sure.
Ok, back to The Last Song. There were only three things that made this movie bearable for me and only one of them is worth mentioning. That being Greg Kinnear. His performance was brilliant! But he's always good, even when placed in a Nicholas Sparks adaptation. (The other two reasons were my adoration of Miley Cyrus's wardrobe and Liam Hemsworth's face.)
Poor Miley Cyrus- she had an opportunity to have a 'mature' role but her performance was so imbalanced. This is especially obvious in the hospital scene with Greg Kinnear. Kinnear's stellar performance just shows how much learning Cyrus needs to do.
