New Moon Review
November 20th 2009 00:26
It…was…surprisingly…good.
Not that it was a perfect movie, but it kept me entertained. There was more action and better acting then the first movie. I’m giving the credit to the improved team of scriptwriters and filmmakers as well as the new director, Chris Weitz.
I finished the last page of the book minutes before pushing play. That way I was able to give a fully informed review.
This movie is faithful to the books without comprising the movie story-telling format. Of course there are a few changes, but in my opinion it was for the better.
*Spoiler Alert*
One scene that particularly stood out was a scene where the were-wolves were chasing Victoria (the evil vampire after Bella). This scene wasn’t really in the books but I’m glad they added it. There were some fantastic visuals and not just CGI in-your-face visuals. What made this scene particularly potent was the music. I just kept thinking, “wow, this is a good song” and then I realized it was Thom York of Radiohead. The tone of the song really helped the over all impact.
The downfall of this move is the disjointed plot. For three fourths of the movie the villain is Victoria, but then we suddenly shift gears. Bella is on a plane to save Edward from himself and the Volturi. I can’t really blame the filmmakers for this fault because that is exactly what happens in the book. I guess someone can claim the major thing to overcome in this story was the separation between Bella and Edward. A problem that definitely gets resolved.
So, it was good. It wasn’t stellar, but it was good- less awkward then the first one, more natural. Taylor Lautner who portrays Jacob Black was particularly good.
So don't expect Shakespeare...but expect a much better film then what we had to endure last year.
