Nowhere Boy

March 31st 2011 15:34
So recently a friend and I watched this ridiculous documentary about the whole “Paul is Dead” hoax. I don’t believe it for obvious reasons but I do like to do research into it since I’m fascinated with all things Beatles.

I was talking to my brother about it when he asked if I’d seen Nowhere Boy. I feel like I’d heard of it but I didn’t’ know what it was about. “It’s about John Lennon’s early life. About his relationship with his mother.”
I nearly hung up on him right then and there just to get down to Wal-Mart and purchase this bad boy.

I looked into it before buying. I love films about the Beatles but only if they’re done well and the actors don’t freak me out. They must be convincing as the fab four and not creepy imitations of the faces, personalities and voices I know so well.

Research showed positive reviews and good things about the led actor. I was sold.

I literal could not wait to get home and watch this.

I was hooked in the first thirty seconds. Aaron Johnson embodied a young John Lennon. He was mischievous, love starved, sarcastic and well- a ‘dreamer’.

I believe the reason for this films success was the excellent cast of actors. Kristin Scott Thomas as Aunt Mimi and Anne-Marie Duff as Julia were refreshing and perfectly cast. They also have this fascinating tension as sisters who are so startling different.

The film quietly and subtly builds up between the three of them (John, Mimi and Julia) until finally it explodes. Needless to say, I was in tears.

Other subtle details helped the atmosphere of this film. The score and soundtrack were great. I also appreciated the decision of the director to not make it about the Beatles but to make it about John. For instance, Paul and George are only known by their first names.

History aside, this film is about relationships. It’s a refreshing look on how we relate to each other. I get tired of relationship movies only being about romantic relationships. This was about a boy relating to his mother, his aunt and his friends.

On a side note, I knew what was coming after the scene where John’s Quarrymen played for the first time. I’ve read enough Beatles history books and usually watch the great anthology documentary once a year. I couldn’t wait to see Paul! When the camera lingered on this kid in the crowd I thought, “The kid from Doctor Who?” Yup! Season 3 episodes 9 and 10 (great episodes by the way). Cute, cute kid- still looks like he’s 12 despite being 20 (?!). Great little actor but if I’m being a nit-picky Beatles fan I needed his eyes to be 5 times bigger.
