Paranormal Activity - Scared Me Silly
January 6th 2010 05:19
Ok, I finally braved the horror that is Paranormal Activity...but it was only after some persistent poking and prodding from my brother.
By now you've all heard about this film. The thing I found strange about it was the amount of conflicting reports concerning the "scary factor" of the film.
A few of my friends said it was absolutely terrifying. Another friend who frequents horror movies said it wasn't scary at all. "Saw was scarier," she said.
After actually seeing it, I guess I can see how she found it dull. It's not dull- don't get me wrong, but the scenes are subtle. They play on quiet, childhood fears such as:
- Darkness
- Creaks in the floorboards
- Shadows on the wall
While I only jumped once, I found the subtly more effective then loud surprises and creepy music.
The power of this film is that it sticks in your head and stays with you for days. It makes you want to turn around at the slightest shadow and check under your bed before hitting the lights.
So, I liked this movie. It was unique and creepy in a way I haven't experienced in film form for a long time.
BTW: Go vote for my video review! There's only about 2 days left. Thanks guys!

This is a movie that you need to see knowing as little as possible about, and certainly not having seen the trailer. I'm a big fan of Blair Witch Project as well, which is very similar in stylistic, narrative concept and marketing. Again, I was lucky to see that movie way ahead of all the hype.
Hype ruined both these movies for so many audiences, a shame.
I'm a big fan of things that go bump in the night, when done with intelligence and conviction.

It's the small things in this film that make it unsettling. Its the style and the -dare I say it- realism of it.
