Normally, I wouldn't look twice at film like this. The forgettable title and DVD cover didn't really jump out at me.
My friends are engaging in a 'girls night' weekly movie. In which we each pick actors we admire and then watch their various movies. I've been doing this for many years (almost had all of Ewan McGregor's movies watching up till 2003). It's nice to be introduced to new actors/actresses and new movies by having such marathons with friends.
We watched this one because of Zachary Levi, who did fantastic in his role as the womanizing-yet-caring friend of Joel Moore's artistically-yet-deranged character. The charming although creepy interactions between Moore's character and Amber Tamblyn's character really kept me on my toes. There would be moment when I thought they were adorable and then suddenly there was something eery and unsettling.
This film relies on the characters to drive the mystery forward. Because it's primarily character-driven it is a slow moving film. My favorite kind of thriller. Almost Hitchcockian in the pacing and twists yet I wouldn't really call this a classic. More like an overlooked gem in the thriller genre. The acting and cinematography are particularly stunning.
The jazzy music added an interesting twist to the dreary atmosphere. The music give the film a hint of film noir- an interesting contrast to the plot and characters.
I'd recommend this film to anyone looking for a suspenseful and unique thriller
