My Own Summer Movie Lists
September 9th 2009 05:33
Rottentomatoes.com just put out a list of the best and the worst this summer season (May - August) had to offer. So I thought, 'well why not?'
Silver Autumn's Top 5 Movies of the Summer of 2009:
5. District 9
This was a smart, gritty spin on the usual alien sci-fi plot. Being a big science fiction fan I really appreciated how intelligently the filmmaker treated the genre. I'd also like to applaud the clever marketing.
4. Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince
While I know that the movie didn't follow the book as much as some of the previous installments, I still found this one to be quite outstanding. The filmmakers captured the essence of the book. The heavy reliance on character dynamics was the strongpoint of this film. A good mix of humor and heartbreak. I also like to note that Tom Felton (Draco) was a particular highlight - he kept the vile exterior of Malfoy while maintaining the inner struggle. Brilliance.
3. Inglourious Basterds
You guys already know how much I liked this film. Funny, terrifying, tense, brilliant acting, fantastic directing, subtle social commentary- utter genius.
2. Up
When I wasn't laughing, I was crying. This movie had me caring about the characters within the first 5 minutes. It was a heartfelt film without being cheesy and trite. It was just honest and unique. I'd also like to add that the style of the animation was a treat to the eye.
1. Star Trek
We could be here all day.. Ok, I've anticipated this film since I heard that Zachary Quinto would be playing young Spock. That was the summer of 2007. Since then I had been keeping up on the filmmaking, noting the casting choices and hanging onto the rumors. I had already invested so much into the movie that I actually thought that it would disappoint. It didn't.
I was a trekkie before I could talk so from a trekkie's point of view- the movie was brilliant. Abrams took a lot of chances but they paid off. Everyone was perfectly cast- my personal favorites being Quinto as Spock, Karl Urban as Dr. McCoy and Simon Pegg as Scotty. The pacing was perfect. The visuals stunning. The plot had a few little holes in it but you were so caught up in the people and story that you ignored said holes.
The one thing I missed from this Star Trek movie was the friendship between Spock and Kirk- but it's understandable. This is the beginning- I'm looking forward to seeing their friendship grow in the next installment.
Instead of giving you the duds of 2009 - *cough* Transformers 2 *cough* I give you:
Top 5 Movies I SHOULD have seen but was too busy:
5. Funny People
4. Ponyo - I'm a big fan of Hayao Miyazaki! What was I doing...I guess It's still playing so I should try and still see it.
3. (500) Days of Summer - I heard nothing but good things about this film.
2. Public Enemies - It got mixed reviews which is exactly why I should have seen it.
1. The Hangover - I don't even have an excuse. I was just busy and lazy. I'll see it though.
