"Do you have child sizes?" Or my Tron: Legacy Review
December 18th 2010 08:13
I'm a huge sci-fi geek- "Live Long and Prosper" kind of sci-fi geek. But there are times when I realize there is a section of the genre that I haven't delved into. So this year I started to educate myself on Tron. I watched the original this past summer. I enjoyed it. I didn't love it and I didn't hate it. I enjoyed it.
Immediately after watching the original I fired up youtube and watched the trailer for the new movie. I was blown away! So needless to say, I was excited for the new movie.
I didn't go to a midnight showing or an IMAX, but I was still excited. My excitement was slightly deflated by a 'rotten' tweet from the guys over at rottentomatoes.com.
This was my third 3D movie. I saw Avatar and Alice in Wonderland in 3D. Neither made me a fan of 3D films. I found the 3D aspect only slightly enhanced the movie experience- not enough to make me dish out another 10 bucks though. So I limit my 3D movies.
Another reason why I don't really like 3D movies is the glasses. I was constantly pushing the glasses back up my nose and trying to jam them into place on my face. I'm a small person (Frodo was my nickname in 2002). But it occurred to me the other day that Toy Story 3 was in 3D- there's gotta be a child size! So when the nice ticket lady handed me the larger adult glasses I hopefully asked, "Do you have child sizes?" I LOVED the look on her face- just the slightest hint of comic confusion. "I have a very small face," I tried to reason. She smiled and my wing-girl just laughed and laughed and laughed.
Good times.
Anyway- trailer after trailer after 3D trailer. Not a whole lot that particularly impressed me. Cowboy and Aliens looks like a lotta fun though!
And finally: TRON
45 minutes into it, I realize why more then half the critics didn't care for it. The script was littered with cheesy lines and unfortunately the characters weren't fleshed out as well as they could have- particularly Sam Flynn. Don't get me wrong- he was pretty and I appreciated the view but I wasn't completely into his character. The typical 'daddy left me' kind of attitude would have been believable on a younger character.
The plot was ok- I think it could have been told in a more effective way.
But the VISUALS! Brilliant! And the atmosphere- perfect! The film had this wonderful 1980's vibe throughout. From the music to the arcade game challenges. The 'Digital Disco Scene' with its 'Digital DJs' was a lot of fun. I particularly loved the music- I'll be consulting itunes later tonight for some highlights from the soundtrack. My new playlist needs a 1980s zing!
Sometimes I have to let a movie sink in for an hour or two before I can make a proper decision on it. The drive home allowed me some time to let it settle. And I do believe I liked it. Honestly, I felt the same way about it that I felt for its predecessor- I didn't love it, I didn't hate it. I enjoyed it.
I wouldn't mind seeing it again, in which case I'll bring my child-size glasses with me to avoid some strange looks from the theater staff.

To be honest, yes the story and characters could have been pumped up - but it's a film all about the visuals and it had more to it than the original. I have seen it twice now and it still blows me away.
I took a 9yr old to watch with me the other day and half an hour before the end he says:
"Jase, how long do you think it has to go?"
Me: "Why? Are you getting bored?" Him "NO, I never want it to end" - it was pure gold. Since then his world has become Tronlike
All the music is created by Daft Punk - who were perfect to remix and modernise all the original music and throw in their own WOW factor.

On the contrary I didn't interpret the re-booted Tron world as so 1980s, it was simply beyond anything. Actually it reminded of the kind of futurism design aesthetics of the late 60s and early 70s. Although I did note another nod that I didn't mention in my own review, of Journey's Frontiers playing in the arcade when Sam finds the hidden basement. Two journey tracks were used in the original Tron: 1990s Theme and Only Solutions.
You're right about the atmosphere, the movie is saturated in it.
I actually like the immersive 3D effect which Avatar also employed. I hate the gimmicky throw-objects-at-the-camera 3D from when I was growing up.
The characters are somewhat two-dimensional, yes, but compared to the original they're much more interesting.
And btw, you don't need the 3D glasses on for the first part that's in 2D, and the specs darken the screen unnecessarily too.
I'm looking forward to a second screening for sure! It's a bio-digital-cosmic-jazz ride!

It's funny. I can't stop thinking about it! I want to go see it again! And you've already seen it twice? Wow. I'm definitely going back for a second and possibly third viewing!
And I agree about the visuals. Mindblowing! Looking forward to having my mind blown again.
Hey Bryn!
This was definitely one of my must-see-movies of 2010. And I do believe it's in my top 10 of 2010.
Yea! I noticed the first bit didn't need the glasses. I took them off and looked around at everyone with their funky glasses still on.
"bio-digital-cosmic-jazz" couldn't have said it better myself. Thanks for the comment.
