X-Men: First Class

X-Men: First Class takes place in the early 1960’s with the new friendship of a young Charles Xavier and Erik Lensherr AKA Professor X and Magneto. They are thrown together to stop Sebastian Shaw – a mutant with energy absorbing powers who intends to start World War 3 by way of the Cuban Missile Crisis.
What made this such a good movie is that it makes X-Men cool again! After Wolverine and Last Stand I gave up on this superhero team. I used to love Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine but I just got tired of it all.
First Class is refreshing because it introduced old characters in a new way. The setting – JFK 1960’s also added a unique charm to the film. It had a very James Bond feel to it.
What really stood out to me were the actors. The idea of finding younger equals to Ian McKellen and Patrick Stewart seemed ridiculous! But James McAvoy and Michael Fassbender were perfect as Charles and Erik! (In fact I believe Fassbender is my new favorite actor.)
What really made these two great was the friendship between them. The bromance chemistry was the real heart of the story. The tragedy of ‘First Class’ is the moment they no longer call each other friend.
First Class had a lot of action and plenty of interesting mutants/characters. It seemed to be lacking in the humor department and I feel like it dragged somewhat in the middle, but ultimately a good superhero film!
This movie reminded me why the X-Men used to be my favorite super hero team (bumped down thanks to the awesomeness that is the Avengers).
